What exactly is a Driver Qualification (DQ) File?
A DQ File is a DOT-mandated record that proves a driver is physically and legally qualified to operate a commercial motor vehicle. It includes applications, medical cards, motor vehicle records (MVRs), and more.
Who is required to maintain DQ Files?
Any motor carrier operating vehicles over 10,001 lbs GVWR in interstate commerce, or vehicles designed to transport 8+ passengers, or any vehicle carrying hazardous materials must maintain these files for every driver.
How long must I keep a driver's records?
Most documents in the DQ File must be kept for as long as the driver is employed and for three years thereafter. Some records, like the Annual MVR and Annual Review, only need to be kept for three years from the document date.
